A hillside residence beside Telluride’s landmark museum, blending restored historic fabric with contemporary forms, passive solar design, and a restrained palette rooted in place.
"Along Gregory Avenue, Museum House stands in dialogue with the historic museum next door and the rugged slope behind it. The design divides into two volumes connected at the center, their massing stepping naturally with the hillside. At the street, a restored historic shed—relocated and reimagined as a guest house—reinforces the pedestrian scale and frames the entry sequence.
Broad overhangs and carefully placed glazing support a passive solar strategy, inviting light in winter and providing shade in summer. Materials were chosen with restraint: stone-like retaining walls, weathered surfaces, and a utilitarian palette that blends with the land while echoing the rustic character of its neighbor. The result is a house that honors Telluride’s past while offering a contemporary retreat—anchored to its site, respectful of its context, and crafted for modern living.
