Reimagined atop a coastal knoll in La Jolla, this residence blurs the line between glass, light, and landscape—becoming a retreat both expansive and deeply personal.
After completing a home in Telluride for longtime clients, we were invited to reimagine their coastal residence in La Jolla. Set high on a knoll with uninterrupted views of the Pacific, the original house—built in the early 1990s—was completely reworked from the ground up. The new design opens the home to its surroundings, both visually and experientially.
Large expanses of glass frame the horizon, capturing the movement of light and ocean while dissolving the threshold between interior and exterior. Natural materials and warm tones ground the structure in its coastal setting, while open, flowing spaces create a sense of ease and calm. Every detail was approached with intention—from the orientation of the rooms to the way the breeze moves through the house—resulting in a retreat that feels expansive yet deeply personal.
